Saint Mary’s Primary School was the first primary school to donate cash and kind to the commissioner Northern relief work in the North.

The teachers, staff and students collected $957.45 in cash, 20 (50kg) sacks and three cartons of clothes, one suitcase of mosquito nets, one strip bag of babies clothes, six cartons assorted items, four cartons of books for Kubulau District School in Bua.

Headteacher Setefano Curuki said they conducted a Tropical Cyclone Winston appeal drive in the school for over two weeks.

“We did this to lift the burden from their parents in Bua, so that they are free from worrying about their children’s books and clothes. This will help families rebuild their house,” Mr Curuki said.

“We are planning to handover the donation to the Commissioner Northern, for the team to deliver goods as most affected villagers are in desperate need of assistance.”

The school also raised $157 and six cartons of assorted items for a Year Six student, whose family house was completely burnt down last year.

The school has 12 teachers and a school roll of about 700 students.
