To achieve 12.65 seconds in a quarter mile drag is not an easy task but Amal Singh has achieved this with his Toyota MR2.

I’m sure many people already know this mean machine which goes by the registration – PNJABI.

His next target – hitting early 12 seconds at the street legal races organised by the Fiji Car Club at the Nanuku Aerodrome in Pacific Harbour.

Mr Singh, originally from Rakiraki, currently resides in Nadera and started racing from 2006 and it hasn’t stopped since.

His maximum speed on the tracks using his Toyota MR2 was 208 km/h.

“Our aim is to do early 12 seconds in the 1/4 mile drag race. If not in the next race then before the year ends hopefully,” Mr Singh said.

Vehicle and upgrades

Mr Singh described Toyota MR2 as having a mid-engine layout for much better traction and balance then most other cars.

“This feature makes this car very special,” he said.

While there is a long list of upgrades Mr Singh said he has done to his car, he mentioned a few major ones.

These include Gt35 turbo, links ECU, forged pistons, rods and bearings, aftermarket racing cams, BC racing adjustables.

“All of the above upgrades has increased overall power and stability of the car, improving timing significantly to 12.65 seconds,” Mr Singh said.

“I don’t have a record of how much money I have spent but I must say lots of time and effort has been put together to build this car.

“Unfortunately there are no parts available locally in terms of performance so parts have been imported from New Zealand, Australia and USA.”

It has taken over three years for Mr Singh to built the car to what it is today. He has won a lot of drag wars and a few ¼ Mile Drag races using his Toyota MR2.
