All the members of the staff at the Fiji Mission Office in Brussels and their families are safe after more than 30 people were killed and hundreds were wounded in bomb blasts at the city international airport and a busy metro station.

Staff member from the Fiji Mission Mesake Ledua had conveyed through electronic mail a message to the Head of Mission in Brussels Deo Saran that all staff and their families were safe.

Mr Saran who was attending a meeting in Morocco during the two bomb blasts on Tuesday forwarded the email to the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ratu Inoke Kubuabola.

Ratu Inoke said the Fijians in the British Army in the suburbs of Mons and Shape and two Fiji nationals attending meetings in Brussels were safe as well.

CNN reported that so far, police had released photos of three men believed to be linked to the Islamic State group were suspects tied to the two blasts.

Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel called the latest attacks “blind, violent and cowardly”, adding: “This is a day of tragedy, a black day… I would like to call on everyone to show calmness and solidarity.”

Three days of national mourning have been declared by the nation.
