Winning gold at the Coca-Cola Games will be the only aim for Suva Grammar School senior girls discus thrower Shanice Takayawa.

The 18-year-old from Totoya village in Lau wants to end her last year at Suva Grammar on a high. She won gold with a throw of 30.50 metres beating her record last year of 26.50 metres.

“I have been training long and hard for the Coke Games and doing well today has boosted my confidence,” Takayawa said.

“It feels good to know that all my hard work and training has paid and I know I can only go up from here.

“I don’t have a trainer like some of the other athletes, I just train with the school and I have been giving it my best.

Last year during the zone meet, Takayawa did not do too well in the stand-still throw. This time around, she tried out the spin and is hooked on it.

Takayawa said she is focussed on improving her performance without worrying too much about her opposition.

“I don’t know about other athletes in my event and I have not sussed out any of them for the Coke Games, I am just concentrating on improving my throw,” she said.

“I don’t like to focus on anyone but myself. Competition have really been tough and all I can do is work on my technique and prepare for the Cokes.”.
