It’s still unusual to see a person more than 40 years old complete an undergraduate programme, but that didn’t deter Livai Maisamoa, 47, from successfully completing his Bachelor of Education (Primary).

The head teacher of Niusawa Methodist Primary School was among more than one thousand graduates at the University of the South Pacific’s graduation ceremony at the Vodafone Arena is Suva yesterday.

He said: “When we were young our parents used to emphasise the importance of education. They always say that despite the family background we were brought up in, if you further your education that is the only thing that will change people’s view about you.

“At this age, their advice still echoes in my mind and this is something I have been telling my children; that is why at this age I chose not to give up and here I am today; successfully graduated.”

“I knew I had to keep moving forward; there were hindrances along the process and that held my studies back; to an extent my wife asked me to quit studying but still I didn’t give up,” he said.

“Times started to change and I could see that teachers who had degrees were starting to dominate the field and it was not like that before where you get a certificate; you can easily get the job. This was something that motivated me to complete my degree or if not there was a possibility I can be shipped out.”

Mr Maisamoa said education didn’t end at the undergraduate level; he planned to further his studies till he successfully completes his Masters.

“The only advice I have for people is they shouldn’t see age as a barrier to further their education because I believe the sky is the limit.”
