For the first time students of Labasa School for Special Education celebrated Easter and Holi together.

Sharneel Nand a mechanical student was playing with colours while Sisilia Sovaia was offering him hot cross buns after the celebration yesterday.

The atmosphere of double celebration was filled joy and unity.

Sharneel, 22, of Bulileka, Labasa said he felt excited celebrating Holi and Easter with his friends who understood him and accepted him the way he was.

“Holi helps to bring the people of all races together,” Sharneel said.

“The tradition of the Holi is that even the enemies turn friends on Holi and forget any feeling of hardship that may be present.

“Besides, on this day people do not differentiate between the rich and poor and everybody celebrate the festival together with a spirit of brotherhood.”

Meanwhile, Sisilia using hand signs assisted by her headteacher Mukesh Chand said Easter this year was more meaningful for her.

“Easter is about sharing the love of Jesus Christ with people around and it does not necessarily have to be verbally explained,” the 11-year-old said.

“It can be shown by sharing hot cross bun or doing drama about the crucifixion of Jesus.

“This is the first year we had so much fun over two celebrations at school.”

Mr Chand said the school decided to have both celebration in one day to bring out unity among the 78 students and 10 teachers and it proved successful.
