A new winner will be crowned in the Open Men’s singles of the Easter Tennis Championship currently underway at the Regional Tennis Complex in Lautoka.

Devashkar Reddy who won the title last year is not participating while Georjimah Row of the Solomon Islands is defending the Open Women’s singles title.

Brisbane based- Sebastian Tikaram is the top bet in the Open Men’s category. The 15-year-old is the son of former Fijian number one Sanjeev Tikaram. He defeated Devrath Narayan 6-4 and 7-5 in his first match yesterday.

Tournament director Sachin Reddy said the main focus is on the junior players.

“There is a tough competition for the men’s open. It is going well with a record of 113 players majority of them are juniors,” he said.

The registered players are from Australia, Tuvalu, Samoa, Vanuatu and Labasa.

He said the matches would be played in four junior categories along with the men, women and mixed categories.

Reddy said this is part of International Tennis Federation’s marketing strategy of the game known as ‘Tennis Play and Stay’.

Results in the Open Men’s are Raynel Singh wbd Jazlaah, Sumeet Lal beat Kunal Singh (6-4, 2-6, 7-6), Fesaitu Kamoe beat Shivneel Chand (6-2, 6-0), Christino Fujiama beat Berlin Hernaam (6-4, 6-3), Graham Many beat Krishan Raju (6-1, 6-2).

The Easter Championship serves as a build-up to the inaugural Oceania Championship to be played in Suva from June 2-9.
