EAST Sepik Governor Sir Michael Somare has denied that he seconded the Opposition’s latest no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Peter O’Neill.

He said this yesterday after the Opposition filed a notice on Tuesday to move a no-confidence motion against O’Neill.

It was moved by Deputy Opposition Leader Sam Basil and said to have been seconded by Sir Michael.

Basil had told The National on Tuesday that Sir Michael had seconded the motion.

The notice of motion was received by Acting Speaker Aide Ganasi and the Private Members’ Committee met yesterday to decide if it was procedurally correct and whether the motion was in the national interest.

The signature of Sir Michael’s fellow National Alliance Member of Parliament Kerenga Kua is understood to have been included in the Opposition motion.

Sir Michael, however, said he only gave his support to the two failed motions last year and not the latest one.

“They should not use the same motion from last year now,” he said.

“It’s invalidated, it’s all gone.

“That’s how the Speaker will explain to Parliament.

“There will be people who will not like this, however, you can’t use the same signature.”

He said the Opposition would have to get a “completely new” notice of motion of no-confidence.

Sir Michael said he and Sinasina-Yongomugl MP Kua explained to the National Alliance caucus meeting on Tuesday night how it was that their names came to be on this latest notice of motion of no confidence.

Sir Michael said he did not support the latest no-confidence motion.
