The Fijian community in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, on Monday raised $13,547 for the victims of Tropical Cyclone Winston.

Fiji High Commission Second Secretary Vilitati Mataitini commended the Fijians who went out of their way to be present at the Holiday Inn PNG to support them in their fund drive on Easter Monday.

“The last Port Moresby Fijian community Cyclone Winston Relief Appeal fundraiser held at the Holiday Inn yesterday raised another $13,547 ($K20,000),” Mr Mataitini said.

Donations towards their fundraising at the weekend and everything they have collected would be sent in this week.

“For this event, appreciation goes to all Fijian families and wantoks and ‘tambus’ for your support,” Mr Mataitini said.

“Big appreciation also to the ‘Friends of Fiji’ committee for your substantial contribution, Holiday Inn for providing the venue FOC, Laguna Hotel, National Airports Corporation and CMF POM for the tents.

“Thank you too to the hardworking committee who will now finalise all contributions and to conclude our community effort from PNG and convey formal appreciations.”

The community has held a number of fundraising efforts for Winston victims.
