The Methodist Church of Fiji have deployed trained counsellors to Cyclone Winston affected areas around the country to help the affected victims.

Reverend James Bhagwan said deployment of counsellors has already begun with ministers and deaconesses.

They were deployed to Vanuabalavu, Cakaudrove and Ra.

Koro, Bua, Tavua/Ba, and Tailevu North will also be catered for.

“The counsellors have undergone a Training of Trainers programme in Disaster Trauma Counselling,” Rev Bhagwan said.

These counsellors will help the affected families and individuals recover as trauma sets in from the wrath of severe Tropical Cyclone Winston.

To add to these efforts, Davuilevu Theological College students are also undergoing training. They will also be deployed in pairs to the affected areas for two weeks.

 

Recovery Measures

The Methodist church  have been providing relief and support in various areas.

The response is coordinated by the Disaster Response Committee, chaired by deputy general secretary, Reverend Ili Vunisuwai.

Meanwhile, the Lautoka Circuit have been working tirelessly distributing relief items to affected areas in the Western Division.

Relief items have also been collected and delivered to Yasawa-i-rara, Ba and Tavua.

The Methodist church is also working on specific recovery and rehabilitation projects with church partners overseas.

The Methodist Church are in the process of receiving donations from overseas in terms of recovery supplies – kitchenware, clothing, bedding, which will be supplied to areas not yet covered.

 

Divisonal Donations

The Methodist Church of Fiji received donations from the following divisions: Rotuma, Suva, Indian Division, Davuilevu, Wesley, Matailobau, Wainimala, Suvavou, Vunidakua, Rewa, Nabua, Kinoya, Naitasiri, Lami, Verata, Makoi, Veiwekani-ni-Ceva, Vatukarasa/Namosi, Cicia, Navosa, T/C Namalata/Kadavu, Namosi

They have sent out relief supplies to: Lomaiviti (Levuka/Ovalau, Batiki), Bau (Wainibuka), Saivou, Vanuabalavu, Yacata, Verata (Qoma, Naigani), Matailobau/Wainimala (Nabobuco), Bua, Ba, Yasawa-i-Rara, Koro, Bau (Dawasamu), Ra (Nakorobilo/Vanuakula),Tavua, Cakaudrove (Naweni/Tacilevu), Nasavusavu/Wailevu.
