The target will be quality infrastructure and modern facilities at Queen Victoria School when rebuilding works begin, says the Minister for Education Mahendra Reddy.

Mr Reddy said during rebuilding workers would also upgrade teachers’ quarters and the staff room.

He said the refurbished buildings would not only have a modern feel but would be built to withstand cyclones.

When asked if the school would retain its current look, Mr Reddy said it would but with improved facilities.

Minister for National Disaster and Management Inia Seruiratu said like other schools QVS had been included in the Government’s long term recovery plan.

Mr Seruiratu said because of the enrolment of students to other schools and the re-posting of the teachers there was no time line set for rebuilding because the damages were huge.

When contacted yesterday the Divisional Education Officer Central Serupepeli Udre said now the ministry wanted a detailed report on Queen Victoria School and all schools damaged by Tropical Cyclone Winston.

The initial report on QVS was that 26 staff quarters and eight classrooms were damaged. Also damaged were the school’s main office, physics lab and computer lab.

Mr Udre said currently all the teachers had vacated all the quarters and had been posted to other schools.
