Use New Roads Wisely, Says FRA

The Fiji Roads Authority is advising all motorists to be more vigilant while driving on upgraded roads in Nadi.

Fiji Roads Authority programme manager for the Nadi and Suva Road Upgrade Project (NASRUP), Zaina Khan, said that some drivers were found speeding on this segment.

The new surfaced roads are from Nasoso towards Votualevu roundabout heading to the airport and likewise from Wailoaloa to Narewa junction heading to Nadi town from Namaka.

She said the new roads were meant to reduce congestion, but the misuse by motorists could lead to accidents.

“We welcome everybody to use the speed limit that is appropriate to the road,” Ms Khan said.

“Everybody will get to their destination quickly and a lot quicker than they have been but if in your enthusiasm of your speed, then you will end up in an accident.

“Heaven forbid; we don’t want this to happen and then the congestion caused by the accident defeats the object of having the new roads; it creates the damage to the new roads as well so we need to think about how to look after our new roads.”

Ms Khan said they would be working closely with the Land Transport Authority and Fiji Police to maintain a safer motoring environment.

“We will be out there monitoring and will be vigilant of what’s going on.”

She said the FRA would be meeting with the LTA on how to progress in particularly after the official opening of these new roads.

“When we officially open the road, there will be a lot enthusiasm for the new road and hopefully we won’t have motorist speeding,” she said.
