Now here’s a good example. That’s the committee members, parents, teachers and students of Nukuloa Sanatan Dharm School in Ra and the initiative they had taken to rebuild their damaged classrooms.

They did not wait for help to come from Government or any organisations.

The Minister for Education, Heritage and Arts, Mahendra Reddy was at the school and thanked them for the effort they showed to rebuild and restart the school as normal.

The Minister said this was the first such school to rebuild their classrooms without any help from other countries or the ministry.

“There are a number of schools under construction now and this is the first school where the community members and the committee have got together and got the six classrooms ready,” he said.

The Ra school demonstrates how members of the community, school management and good leadership can rise up to the challenges and deal with the issue at hand.

There are schools that were severely damaged and had nothing left.

Let’s be united in doing whatever we can before help arrives. We should also be rest assured that Government will help in rebuilding.

Government has already enrolled students from damaged schools transferred to other schools.

The next phase is rebuilding schools. And getting help for the schools.

The Prime Minister’s Adopt a School initiative is part of this.

The Government, we know, values and emphasises education.

Delivering the keynote address at the Fiji Principals Association conference Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama said: “There is no sector more important to my Government than the education sector – the determination we all share to ensure that our children and young people get the best possible start in life. And provide them with the skills they need to make the most of their lives and contribute to the development of our nation.”

There is another thing among what Mr Bainimarama encourages – communities that work to help themselves as well. Nukuloa Sanatan Dharm School in Ra is a perfect example.
