A month has passed since Tropical Cyclone Winston made landfall here but students of Dobuilevu Muslim Primary in Ra are still picking up the pieces of what the monster cyclone left behind.

Headteacher Shahim Hussain said many of his students had lost their homes.

The school caters for 108 students from nearby settlements like Burenitu, Navau, Dreketi, Nalawa and Rakuvuaka villages.

When Fiji Sun reached the school yesterday, some students were seated on the verandah because their classrooms were unfit to use.

“Our school was used as an evacuation centre where 57 families sheltered; most of our students were from these families,” Mr Hussain said.

“Right now we are just trying to survive with what we have left. Classrooms were flooded and we have relocated our students to other rooms,” he said.

Mr Hussain said some students lost all their stationaries but with the assistance of the Fiji Muslim League and non-government organisations they were able to provide books for the students.

“All our computers were destroyed and roofs were blown off by strong winds,” he said.

“We have also seen a drop in attendance after the cyclone; but then it started increasing after we launched the lunch programme.

“This cyclone had affected us emotionally, physically, financially and mentally; it’s obvious among our students. In order to help them we had decided by asking them to tell their stories so that they can get it out of their system,” he said.
