The Suva and Nadi football sides received a major boost yesterday ahead of their preparation for the 2016 Oceania Football Confederation Champions League (OFC).

Fiji Football Association in conjunction with Vodafone Fiji yesterday handed the two sides a cheque of $50,000 each in assistance for the Champions League (OFC).

The OFC Champions League is set to kick off next Friday in Auckland, New Zealand.

Vodafone Fiji  acting chief marketing officer Avichal Prasad says the hand-over of $100,000 between the two teams ensures Vodafone’s solid support for the teams whilst building up to the Champions League.

“As part of our continued efforts to raise the profiles of football in the local grounds and offer our talents the opportunity to show their skills in the international arenas.

“We anticipate a successful year for football as we wish both the teams; Suva and Nadi a successful outing in claiming the title and qualifying for the FIFA Club World Cup to create another historical moment in Fiji soccer,” he said.

Both the teams hope to give their best shot at the tournament in Auckland.

Nadi president Naveeda Goundar says this will be the third time Nadi is playing so expectations will be high.

“At the same time I want to wish Suva all the best, they are in with us going to play. I’m not saying anything wrong just because most of my players are playing I wish all my players who are playing for Suva all the best and hope that you qualify from you pool and we meet in the semi-finals then we decide who the champions is,” he said.

Gounder added though training was hindered by the cyclone the team is training every day and will prepare well for the games in New Zealand.

Nadi is expected to play Tahiti’s AS Tefana on the opening day while Suva will take on Team Wellington in its first match a day later.
