The Australian government will be repairing 26 schools in the western and northern division under Australian Aid.

A total of F$1.6m has been budgeted for this.

In 2011 the Australian government started a six year programme with the education sector of Fiji called the Access to Quality Education Programme (AQEP) where they had supported 85 primary schools.

During Tropical Cyclone Winston 42 Primary Schools were affected and the Australian government has made it their responsibility to repair 26 of those schools that received minor or partial damage.

Australian High Commissioner to Fiji Margaret Twomey said: “(I) am very pleased to announce that Australia is responding to the Prime Minister’s call and will adopt 26 affected schools by commissioning FJ$1.6m through our existing programme AQEP which we have with the Ministry of Education.

“Today’s assistance comes in addition to the FJ$23 million funding package that Australia has already announced for Fiji in a immediate way for Cyclone Winston and through this programme Australia will repair and restore damaged facilities and fund the delivery of literacy and numeracy kits to the 26 schools in Ra, Cakaudrove and Lautoka.”

Minister for Education Mahendra Reddy said: “It’s a sign of hope for us in regards to how we can better do our jobs.

“We thank you and your government and the Australian people for the support in this hour of need.”

The work is to start right away as the Australian government wants the education sector to get back to normal allowing students to have proper classrooms and learning materials.

“We’ll start straight away with planning and scoping with the view to getting work underway in May and aim to complete the work by August,” Ms Twomey said.
