Multilateral agencies connection

Fiji Airways’ Nadi-Singapore flights are significant not only because they opens up another route for the tourism sector, but Singapore itself provides major onward routes.

These sentiments were highlighted by the Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum yesterday as Fiji Airways prepares for its inaugural Nadi-Singapore flight on Tuesday.

“It’s not just Singapore itself but also the onward routes – onward destinations like India which has the second largest outbound market currently in the world,” he said.

“We are looking at India coming out as the largest outbound market in four to seven years time. So that’s a good source market for tourism arrivals. And of course the Middle East.

“Singapore is a very significant hub. It does provide that level of connectivity.

“The idea is to still try and formulate code sharing and inter airline agreements with other airline companies for onward routes and services.”

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum further highlighted the other significant issue was Singapore was not just a travelling hub but also it has a number of multilateral agencies, a number of organisations that are based in Singapore.

“For Fiji to have that direct flight, gives us that level of connectivity,” he said.

“It also means it opens up a gateway for people who may want to come to Fiji and even set up regional offices here.

“To have connectivity to Singapore, Hong Kong, Korea, Los Angeles and now for San Francisco as well as Australia and New Zealand, it does enhance our status as a hub.

“That level of connectivity is an important issue when you are going out and talking to organisations and Governments and countries and saying, come to Fiji because we have very good connectivity.

“So that is a long term strategy we had in mind in terms of getting connectivity to Singapore.”

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum stressed we have the opportunity to attract more and more people to come to Fiji and for them to come to Fiji for reasons which they did not come to Fiji for before.
