Fiji’s Ambassador for Climate Change and Oceans Amena Yauvoli is currently attending the first session of the Preparatory Committee in New York.

The Committee is currently working on the development of an international legal binding instrument under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) on the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity of areas beyond national jurisdiction.

Mr Yauvoli yesterday posted online an update on the meeting discussions.

He wrote: “1 national statement + 5 interventions on key thematic issues made in the last 3 days. Well done Team Fiji! 6 more days to go! Toso Viti.”

The  Preparatory Committee will  then  make substantive recommendations to the General Assembly on the elements of a draft text of an international legally binding instrument under UNCLOS, taking into account the various reports of the Co-Chairs on the work relating to the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity.

The first session of the Preparatory started in New York on Monday and will end next Friday.
