The Ministry of Health is investigating a complaint from a family regarding the death of their mother at the Labasa Hospital earlier this week.

Assistant Minister for Health and Medical Services Veena Bhatnagar said she had received a complaint from a family and that the ministry was carrying out an investigation before she could comment on the issue.

Tuatua resident Suren Prasad said he had sent an email to Ms Bhatnagar and also written to the heads of the Labasa Hospital alleging that his mother 70-year-old Ram Basanti went into a coma, which led to her death from an injection that was administered by a hospital nurse.

“Ms Bhatnagar called and assured me that she will look into this and call me back,” he said.

“I am still waiting for her response.”

Mr Prasad claimed his mother Mrs Basanti died after a nurse gave an injection following a doctor’s instruction on March 19.

He said his mother immediately collapsed and went into coma.

“She was admitted at the hospital for ten days and then left us,” Mr Prasad said.

Mr Prasad said he had repeatedly requested the hospital staff not to even think about administering an injection to Mrs Basanti but the doctor instructed the nurse for the injection.
