Votualevu College (VC) defied all odds to create history as the new girl’s champion of the Nadi Athletics zone meet at Prince Charles Park, Nadi yesterday.

The school edged out favourites Ratu Navula College (RNC) in the silver medal count after both schools bagged nine gold medals a piece. Votualevu College principal Vinod Sharan said it was team work that propelled their girl’s team to win their first title.

“This is the first time for the school to win the overall girls title,” he said.

“Previously we would be runner-up. The students and teachers will cherish this special achievement by our athletics.”

Sabeto College had a surprise finish in third postion with eight gold medals, four silver and six bronze.

Ratu Navula College retained their boy’s division title with a convincing 21 gold medals, 12 silver and six bronze. Votualevu College was in second place with 10 gold medals, seven silver and 11 bronze while Korovuto College settled for third with seven gold medals, four silver and four bronze.

Meet manager Pita Molidua said a total of 43 records were smashed during the two-day event with 29 set on day two alone.

“This year was another fantastic year for the Nadi zone and we hope to do our best at the Coke Games,” he said.

Ratu Navula’s Salaseini Tuwai scooped the Best Female Award winning three gold medals in the junior girls 100m, 200m and anchored the 4x100m.

William Osborne of Nadi Muslim College was the Best Male Athlete with two gold medals in the junior boys discus (a record throw of 33 metres) and shot put.
