A family of eight are homeless after their six bedroom corrugated house was completely destroyed by fire at Tomuka, Lautoka on Friday.

Neighbour Yvonne Paul, 20, who recounted the ordeal, said she was having her shower when flames engulfed the house five metres away.

“I called my mum who was shopping around in town and told her to call the fire station. After few minutes the fire brigade came but was too late to control,” she said.

Ms Paul said the house owner’s wife and three children, including a four-day-old baby, managed to escape the tragic incident unharmed.

“Lucky the fire did not spread to the neighbours and no one was hurt,” Ms Paul said.

The home owners have moved to stay with a relative in another area.

Police spokesperson inspector Josaia Weicavu confirmed the incident happened at around midday.

“All its content was destroyed, Police and the National Fire Authority are still conducting investigations to ascertain the cause of fire,” Mr Weicavu said.

“We again would like to advise home owners to be very careful about their properties. A single match stick, candle, mosquito coil, electric appliances and other combustible items can destroy your life time effort if we are not careful on how and when we use them.”
