The Suva Rugby Union (SRU) club competition started on a high note at the Bidesi and Buckhurst Park grounds in Suva yesterday.

In the opening game of the competition Police and National Fire Authority (NFA) played to a 15-all draw in a fiery encounter.

Marist defeated Lomaiviti 17-15 while QVSOB beat Covenant Brothers 15-5. Stallions edged out USP 20-16 while Savura scored an upset 19-13 win over Harlequins.

In the Koroturaga Cup challenge, Qauia beat holders Tovata 13-10 while the star-studded Wardens side thrashed Nasinu 64-3.

Wardens laced with former Vodafone Fijian 7s playmaker Jioji Ragamate used their fast backline to run havoc over the Nasinu defence.

SRU interim chairman Lai Kavei was impressed with the clubs’ performance.

“All teams were impressive and showed a lot of skills,” he said.

“We also have new clubs joining us this season with the likes of Wardens, Lami and Namuka-i-Lau. We expect the competition to get tougher as it progresses.
