‘Mercy Is God’s Defining Attribute’

The Archdiocese of Suva gathered yesterday at the Vodafone Arena to celebrate the Jubilee of Mercy Congress.

Mercy is God’s defining attribute   was the message echoed from the head of the country’s Catholic Church, Archbishop Peter Loy Chong.

He said Pope Francis has already dedicated this year as the Jubilee Year of Mercy.

Archbishop Chong said in his letter to the church, Pope Francis emphasised the need for us to constantly contemplate on the mystery of mercy. It is a well-spring of joy, serenity and peace.

“Pope Francis teaches us that mercy is the first and most important attribute of God,” Archbishop Chong said.

“For Pope Francis’ book released on January 12 titled ‘The Name of God is Mercy’ stipulates that mercy is the foundation of the church’s life. The church’s very credibility is seen in how she knows merciful and compassionate love.”

Youths from different parishes also take part in the two-day congress.

Today, Archbishop Chong will talk on the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy at 11am, followed by the testimonies and sharing.

Catholics around the world celebrate the Divine Mercy Sunday today.

“Divine Mercy Sunday offers the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Suva a platform to celebrate the Jubilee Year of Mercy,” Archbishop Chong said.

The congress ends today with a procession from Marist Brother High School to the Vodafone Arena for the Eucharistic celebration at 3pm. The procession starts at 2pm.

Archbishop Chong also thanked the organising committee and everyone who generously donated towards the event.
