The Queensland-Fiji Disaster Relief Group handed over a FJ$53,298.77 cheque to the Soroptimist International of Ba last week.

The group, which is headed by Queensland, Australia resident Umesh Chandra, raised the amount through various fundraisings.

Mr Chandra said: “After Cyclone Winston hit Fiji, I came to assess the damages it brought to the people.

“Witnessing the devastation it caused, I seek the partnership to work together with Soroptimist International of Ba in assisting the needy families. It is then that the “Rebuilding Homes, Rebuilding Lives” project conceptualised,” he said.

Mr Chandra also said this project would help those families who had lost homes and do not have any other means of income to help them rebuild shelter.

SI Ba project co-ordinator Maria Doton said the SI Ba would always be grateful to the Queensland Fiji Disaster Relief Group.

Ms Doton said: “This generous gesture of the people of Brisbane will always be cherished will bring great change to the lives of these families.”

The presentation of cheque and signing of the Memorandum of understanding between SI Ba President, Veena Sharma and Umesh Chandra took place in Ba last week and was witnessed by the members of Soroptimist International of Ba and invited guests.
