A developing tropical disturbance now active North-West of Fiji could “strengthen to Category One tropical cyclone intensity”, says NaDraki Weather.

The tropical disturbance, according to NaDraki, was moving South-East towards Fiji yesterday and may pass close to us later tomorrow.

It also said the disturbance was likely to strengthen further after it passes the group during the middle of this week.

Also confirming this, the Fiji Meteorological Service, said they were now monitoring the tropical disturbance (TD14F).

Director Ravind Kumar forecast that in the coming days, the tropical disturbance (TD14F) was expected to move South-Eastward and pass to the West of Fiji later tomorrow.

Mr Kumar is advising the public to remain alert because the likelihood of flooding in low-lying areas was possible.

“A trough of low pressure associated with TDF14 is currently causing rain with isolated heavy falls over the North and it is expected to spread to the rest of the group,” he said.

“Winds are expected to change to North to North-Westerly direction and it’s expected to become strong with speeds of 60kmph and momentary gusts to 75kmph over the land areas of Yasawa and Mamanuca, the Western half of Viti Levu and Vanua Levu from later on Monday as TD14F moves to the West of Fiji.”

Mr Kumar said we were still in the wet and tropical season and that all sectors of the community must understand its importance and take heed of the warning.

“Warnings are meant to provide us a heads-up on what is expected so that wise and life saving decisions can be timely made,” he said.

“Listen in very carefully to the weather bulletins especially those in the maritime areas who normally use open punts and small outboard motors for movements.”
