It is important that private entities work in partnership with Government in moving the country forward especially after the devastation was left behind by Tropical Cyclone Winston.

These were the sentiments of Permanent Secretary for Fisheries and Forests Samuela Lagataki to several stakeholders of the ministry that he visited during his recent visit to the Northern Division.

Mr Lagataki visited several sawmillers in Savusavu and Labasa as well as J Hunter Pearls Fiji to see for himself the losses that they may have incurred and their efforts in trying to return to normalcy.

The PS also heaped praises on their efforts so far and encouraged them to continue with the work they were passionate about.

“The ministry will work with you and will ensure that you are able to continue your business successfully in the coming months,” Mr Lagataki said.

Justin Hunter of J Hunter Pearls Fiji said that the Private Public Partnership (PPP) should certainly be strengthened as there was a huge potential for expansion of their businesses to other areas.

“We will keep supporting the communities and I know that we will get back on our feet and continue to farm pearls and with whatever assistance that we are able to harness, it will certainly go a long way,” Mr Hunter said.

J Hunter Pearls suffered damage to their showroom, jetty and hatchery.

Mr Lagataki gave the same assurances to the sawmill businesses that he visited and said he was adamant to continue with his visitations to other stakeholders around the country to encourage partnerships with the ministry in ensuring the way forward.
