The Ministry of Education has now finalised the school term dates this year.

“At the end of Term One, school will break for one week only as there was already one week break immediately after Cyclone Winston,’’ the Minister for Education, Heritage and Arts, Mahendra Reddy, said.

Taking into account the loss of teaching and learning time because of Cyclone Winston and the current floods, Mr Reddy said they had decided to reduce the Term Two break from two weeks to one week as well.

The one week gained will be added to Term Three thus, schools will get one more week of teaching and learning time.

“This is an exceptional year and we all need to rise up and sacrifice,” he said.

“By teaching one more week, we will greatly assist the students in the cyclone/flood affected areas who have lost some teaching time. The ones in the non-affected areas will also benefit with this additional week,’’ Mr Reddy said.

“It is in the interest of our children that we all sacrifice a little bit of comfort and ensure Winston does not deter their dreams.”

He said this change was only for this year and the teachers only lose one week of leisure time.

The Minister said more strategies would be announced later on how students would be provided with additional learning hours and resources to ensure they were not disadvantaged in any way while trying to gain new knowledge and preparing for their external exams.
