8 Years For Rape

A 45-year-old farmer was sentenced to eight years imprisonment by the High Court in Labasa last Friday.

Mosese Verebasaga, who was charged with one count of rape, appeared before Justice Acahala Wengappuli.

During Verebasaga’s sentencing the court heard that on the day of the incident, the accused had tied the 35-year-old male victim’s hands to a tree despite his pleas not to and raped him.

While delivering his sentence, Justice Wengappuli told the accused that he had breached the trust the victim had towards him and had also taken advantage of the victim’s mental and physical vulnerability.

Justice Wengappuli also said the offence showed a significant degree of opportunistic planning and it had left the victim traumatised.

In mitigation the court heard that he was a first-offender and the sole-breadwinner for his family with seven children.

Verebasaga will be eligible for parole after serving seven years.
