Villagers of Vatutu Village in Nadi are grieving the loss of  a 58-year-old man who drowned while attempting to cross a flooded river.

Farmer Ulaiasi Nawale, who was last seen heading towards his farm to secure his livestock, never returned home on Monday.

Police spokesperson Naina Ragigia said the body was discovered at the Uciwai Beach, Nadi at around midday yesterday.

“The man was reported missing at the Nadi Police Station this morning after which he had been missing from Monday (04/04/16) by a family member,” she said.

The victim’s nephew, Timoci Nawale, said his uncle would be surely missed.

“He was a very funny and loveable man in the village,” he said.

“He had gone to get his horse on Monday morning which was tied on the other bank of the river. While crossing he was swept away by strong currents.”

A post mortem examination is expected to be conducted soon.
