Fiji Airways’ first flight to Singapore’s Changi International Airport was launched in Nadi Tuesday night.

A function was held at the Nadi International Airport to launch the inaugural flight and a welcome ceremony was held at Changi Airport in Singapore.

Fiji Airways Managing Director/CEO Andre Viljoen and Executive General Manager Shaenaz Voss were amongst those aboard along with the Fijian media.

Mr Viljoen said he was happy with the response to the early flights.

He said they are working with Tourism Fiji to promote Fiji as a destination.

This is the first new country Fiji Airways is flying to since 2009 when it launched the new Hong Kong route.

Singapore, being a hub, opens easier links to other destinations including India.

Talks are already understood to be with Air India and Jet Airways for code sharing with Fiji Airways.

If all goes well, this would be a major boost for this route.

Fiji Airways announced its decision to commence twice-weekly direct services Nadi-Singapore-Nadi in November.

The flights will leave Nadi on Tuesdays and Fridays departing late night and arriving in Singapore early morning.

The flight times have been scheduled to suit onward connections with India and South East Asia.

To support the national carrier in this new endeavour to offer attractive ticketing pricing,

Government offered a subsidy of $18 million in the 2016 National Budget to Fiji Airways.
