A father’s responsibility is to protect and look after his daughters well and not sexually abuse them, said Justice Salesi Temo at the High Court in Suva.

Justice Temo made the comment while sentencing the 30-year-old man to 13 years for raping and sexually assaulting his daughters who were 11 and 13 in 2013.

Justice Temo said the relationship between a father and daughter was sacred and by committing such an offence, the father had breached his daughters’ trust.

“The accused’s was girls’ biological father and guardian,” Jutice Temo said.

“As such he was supposed to protect them and look after them well.”

Justice Temo said the girls relied on their father for support and protection.

The father was found guilty on one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault.

The 30-year-old committed the offence on his daughters who were aged 11 and 13 between August 1, 2013 and October 31, 2013 in a settlement in Nasinu.

Justice Temo said: “By offending against his daughters, the accused had shown utter disregard to their rights as human beings and their rights not to be harmed within their own family.”
