Child Helpline Is Now 24/7

The National Child Helpline has now been upgraded to a 24-hour service from the initial launch last year which was operating for only 12 hours.

This is after a memorandum of understanding on the child help line was signed between the Ministry for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation with the Medical Service Pacific and communication network companies in Fiji.

The Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation, Rosy Akbar, said the launch was another effort of the Fijian Government with its key stakeholders to broaden the platform for child protection and welfare in Fiji.

“The National Child Help Line (NCHL) is a Fijian Government initiative under the child protection multiyear work plan agreed with UNICEF to provide improved services for the prevention of child abuse and neglect,” she said.

“The NCHL responds to the increasing incidences of child abuse and exploitation which were being reported by individuals, authorities and civil society.

“The Government recognised a need to strengthen protection systems for children in order to prevent abuse and to provide support to those that face abuse and neglect.”

Ms Akbar said the child helpline, in the initial launch last year, was operational only from 6am to 6pm.

“But now it’s going to operate 24 hours, seven days a week with professional counsellors who will provide advice and counselling for 24 hours and service is offered in English, Rotuma, iTaukei and Hindustani,” she said.

Medical Services Pacific founder and executive director Jennifer Poole said the helpline would help children come out of the problems that they face.

“Some maybe going through some sort of abuse but they are scared to tell anyone; this help line will assist them,” she said.
