The Ministry of Health has had discussions with the United States’ Ambassador to Fiji Judith Cefkin, following a travel advisory issued about the presence of the Zika virus here.

America’s Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has been working with other public health officials monitoring ongoing Zika virus transmissions around the world.

Its advisory informs travellers that Zika virus is indeed present in Fiji.

Minister for Health and Medical Servicers Jone Usamate said: “We have Zika virus in our country, but we have our Zika action plan that has been rolled out to address this issue.

“Our message to our people is that for anything to do with mosquitoes, our focus is to eliminate mosquitoes and this is what we need to focus on,” he said.
