We applaud Government’s new Help for Homes initiative.

As announced by Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama this initiative is intended to help Fijians repair their homes themselves by giving them access to building materials.

Government has stuck to its promise to rebuild damaged homes after Tropical Cyclone Winston.

This announcement has really lifted the morale of those affected people.

These homeowners should be rest assured their new homes will be built to withstand cyclones as the Fiji Institution of Engineers (FIE) will issue building code guidelines.

And these guidelines will help them build better, more resilient homes. FIE will show how to properly strap down their roofing, something that was not done in many damaged homes.

During the Prime Minister’s trip to the cyclone affected areas he listened to people about what they needed to get back on their feet.

Their overwhelming request has been for resources they need to rebuild their own homes.

Now that their requests had been acted on, the onus is on them.

They do not want to rebuild their homes after every cyclone.

To make this happen Government will be putting new laws in place to control the quality of our construction companies and the entire construction industry.

Currently, the laws in Fiji allow for anyone to form a building or construction company without receiving any accreditation or licensing.

The Prime Minister has announced that this can no longer be tolerated.

In the past the building code was not followed so people were always at risk.

Now every public building in Fiji and every piece of infrastructure that has been damaged or destroyed by Cyclone Winston will be rebuilt to stringent new standards.

We should be happy that every new home – and certainly public housing – will be built to these new standards.

TC Winston has come and gone but the destruction it left behind is unprecedented.

It could take years to repair or rebuild new homes for everyone and make the necessary repairs but we should congratulate our Government for the commitment it has made to rebuild damaged homes.

In this rebuilding, homeowners should be patient and should not take short-cuts.

Your newly rebuilt home will not only provide shelter from sun and rain, it has to provide shelter and withstand any type of cyclone.
