Police Treat Olosara House Fire As Arson

Police are treating the destruction of a four-bedroom house in Olosara, Nadroga, through a fire as arson.

The incident has made 10 people homeless.

Police spokesperson Inspector Josaia Weicavu said the incident happened around 1am yesterday.

“We are treating the case as of arson. The cause of the fire is yet to be established and the motive behind this case,” Inspector Weicavu said.

He said the house was vacant when the incident happened. Police investigations are continuing.

According to neighbour Faiyaz Mohammed, 10 people have been made homeless after the house was completely destroyed.

Mr Mohammed also witnessed the house being burned down.

“When I came out of the house, I saw the house on fire and mostly neighbours standing outside the homes,” he said.

“The family were not here when the fire occurred; I think they went to their relatives. This is the third house in the same compound that has burned down. I think one of the neighbours called the fire brigade and they came bit too late.”

Police are advising the public to be vigilant for the safety of their homes because the number of structural fires continue to rise.

“We are appealing to members of the public to look after their property and practice fire safety at all times,” Inspector Weicavu said.
