Road Works Continue: FRA

Works on damaged roads including patching up potholes in the Western Division has been progressing.
This was after the rain and flooding from the recent tropical depression and Cyclone Zena resulted in an increase in the number of potholes along the main sealed roads.
Fiji Roads Authority acting chief executive officer Rory Garland said maintenance contractor Higgins (Fiji) Limited was carrying out the maintenance work.
“Now that the weather has improved we will be working hard to get the pothole situation under control again,” Mr Garland said.
“This is likely to take up to two weeks and we ask all drivers to take extra care while using the roads.”
He said unsealed road also suffered lot of damage in the West because there were extensive washouts of gravel and drain blockages.
“Our contractors, Higgins have started pothole patching as soon as practical. Some of these roads may not be currently suitable for bus at this stage and Higgins will start repair works on these bus routes.”
He said some of the major crossing approaches in Rakiraki, Ba, Lautoka and Sigatoka were washed out.
“Many of these were originally damaged in Tropical Cyclone Winston and the temporary repairs have been damaged by these more recent events. It will take about two to three weeks to get on top of this,” Mr Garland said.
