We Need To Be Ruthless: Cracknell

The Telecom Fijiana team take on Canada today in the Cup quarterfinals of the Women’s Sevens Series in Atlanta, USA.
TFL Fijiana had a good start yesterday thrashing Colombia 41-7 but later went down 28-7 to England and series leaders Australia 22-5, at the Fifth Third Bank Stadium.
Fiji Rugby Women’s coaching director Chris Cracknell said it was a frustrating day for them with basic mistakes, referee’s decisions and failure to keep possession of the ball being their major downfalls.
“We got off to a nervous start against Colombia but later the girls put on a professional performance to start their day,” he said.
“Our game against England was just frustrating as our offloads didn’t stick and we had three head rolls on our girls, which should have been penalties our way.
“That said, the girls didn’t stick to the game plan and we didn’t keep enough balls to execute our moves while England did.
“Our game against Australia was a much-closer affair despite the score line.
“Our offloads started to flow but we were just not ruthless enough to score points. Like I say a frustrating day as I see huge potential in the girls but they just need to start believing in what we as the management group see in them.”
With today’s assignment, Cracknell said ball possession and being more brutal in their attacks is what they need to do as they prepare for the Canadians.
“Canada are very clinical and will do their homework on us but our girls look excited and surprisingly fresh considering the tough day they have had,” he said.
“Self belief, keeping the ball and being more ruthless in attack is what we need to do, we need teams to start fearing us the second they lose the ball as they did in Dubai.” Fiji take on Canada at 8:52am.
