The construction of the $16million Four Long Cogeloa Bridge in Labasa is expected to begin later this month.

Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) programme manager for bridges and jetties, Nixon Toremana, said Cogeloa Bridge was one of the priority bridges identified by FRA needing immediate replacement.

“Fletcher Construction Company was awarded the tender to design and build Four Long Bridges and Cogeloa Bridge is included in this project.”

He said the new bridge would bring relief to the community, especially sugarcane farmers.

Mr Toremana said the existing bridge structure would be demolished and replaced with a new one.

“While the bridge is closed, vehicle traffic will be diverted via the Wainikoro Road and Cogeloa Temple Road,” he said.

The temporary detour will remain in place for the duration of this work.

The contractor will also provide temporary access to foot traffic prior to the demolition of the existing bridge. Mr Toremana said there would be some temporary inconvenience during the construction period, but once the bridge was completed, transportation problems would be a thing of the past.

“We will ensure that all works carried out on site will be done whilst minimising their impact upon the local environment and residents.”

All works is expected to be completed by the end of February 2017.

The project is funded by FRA under bridges and jetties renewals budget.
