‘We Did It By Faith’

The Vodafone Fijians 7s team retained their Hong Kong 7s title by beating New Zealand 21-7 in the final last night.

A breathless Vodafone Fijian 7s skipper Osea Kolinisau said what kept them going was their faith in God.

““It means a lot to us as players and the fans and also the people back home,” he said.

“We had to work hard and God took care of the rest. That kept us going. And at times we had last minute wins over Canada and Kenya.”

Topping off Fiji’s celebration was when France-based forward Semi Kunatani was named the HSBC Player of the Final.

Playing on a slippery surface, New Zealand took an early lead through a Pita Ahki try, which was converted by Gillian Kaka. But the lead was short-lived as Fiji hit back with a try to Jerry Tuwai, which was converted leaving the scores 7-7 at halftime.

In the second half super sub Kitione Taliga broke the defence to score the second try while Kunatani sealed New Zealand’s fate with try in the dying moments.

Kolinisau converted all three tries.
