Voyager Of The Seas in Suva yesterday

Cabbies in Lautoka are happy with the ongoing business originating from cruise liners at the Lautoka Wharf.

Nischal Deo, 45, was among the many taxi drivers who were transporting the passengers of The Royal Caribbean International  cruise ship (Voyager of the Seas).

Mr Deo has been driving taxis for the last 23 year said, “We are trying to do our best in this tough time; there has been a tropical cyclone.

“And another flooding but we are grateful for these cruise liners because they bring in business.

“We appreciate the extra dollar we make as they come at the Lautoka Wharf.”

Another taxi driver Umlesh Kumar said there have been trying times for the people of Fiji.

“We had two disasters back to back, but we are fortunate that these cruise liners are coming because they bring in a few businesses.”

Lautoka City Council chief executive officer Jone Nakauvadra said, “We really appreciate the cruise ships bringing in visitors to Lautoka, this will help the economy in terms of employment.

“Most of the cruise liners coming now will benefit the business in Lautoka.

“Our only concern is it usually comes on Sunday and the half of the shops in Lautoka are closed that day.

“Overall the Lautoka Chamber of Commerce and Industry is happy with the ships coming in and bringing tourists,” he said.

Among the 3754 passengers accompanied by 1206 crews were Sydney couple Habib and Mary Eskandari.

Mr Habib said, “The weather is wonderful and the sea is just breathtaking.”

He said the ship had just come back from Mystery Island and stopped over in Suva on Saturday before coming.

It was also the first time the couple visited Fiji and a family friend had taken them around for sightseeing.

“My son’s friend came to pick us up and we went around the city and to their home, but the sea is beautiful definitely.

“We bought some souvenirs with us and we are planning on coming back to Fiji for another trip.”
