Rural Fijians applying for the Rural Housing Assistance (RHA) Scheme can expect to save costs following a decision by Government to reduce applicants’ one third contribution.

The amendment follows a reduction in building materials costs attributed directly to the decrease of Value Added Tax from 15 per cent to 9 per cent.

Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development and National Disaster Management permanent secretary, Meleti Bainimarama said the 1/3 contribution of the RHA Programme is based on the current market price of building materials.

He said, “The previous market price for the 24×16 timber frame RHA building was $18,307.19 and applicants had to pay a 1/3 contribution of $6,102.43.”

“Due to the reduction in VAT from 15 per cent to 9 per cent as announced by Government, the current or new market price has decreased to below $18,000 and accordingly we have reduced the 1/3 contribution to below $6,000.”

“We are urging rural Fijians to take advantage of this change and benefit from cyclone resistant homes”.

Mr. Bainimarama added that the slight variation in costs between the divisions is based on the current market price of building materials at the divisions.

The new one third contributions for Rural Housing Assistance are as follows:

Division Cost of New 24 x 16 Wooden House One-third (1/3) contribution
Central $17,146.86 $5,715.62
Eastern $17,146.86 $5,715.62
Western $17,204.66 $5,734.89
Northern $17,725.45 $5,908.48
