The people of Vanuabalavu in Lau are expected to receive more assistance from the New Zealand Government.

This is following the assessment made by a team of officials from New Zealand on the island last week.

New Zealand High Commissioner to Fiji Mark Ramsden, during his fourth visit to the island of Vanuabalavu yesterday, said the New Zealand government is very keen to assist the Fijian people.

“The partnership between the New Zealand assistance team, the people of Vanuabalavu and also the Government of Fiji has been further strengthened and there has been enormous change in the past seven weeks,”Mr Ramsden said.

“I was struck to see the huge amount of changes in the villages from the planting to the rebuilding of houses and it is notable and evident that the people of Vanuabalavu has been really working hard to stand up again after Tropical Cyclone Winston,” he said.

Mr Ramsden said that through the assessment, the New Zealand government – through its partnership with our Government – will then decide on what other forms of assistance are needed.
