Three long years of waiting for solar panels delivery was  raised by villagers to Prime Minister during a talanoa session at Kubulau District School in Bua this week.

Kilaka villager Viliame Yakayaka raised the delay of service to Voreqe Bainimarama for 18 households who have paid $300 for their solar panel project three years ago.

“For three years we are waiting for the Department of Energy in Labasa to carry out this project,” Mr Yakayaka said.

“Over the years we have been using generator and kerosene lantern to lighten up our homes.

“The nearby villages, Namalata and Kiobo have solar power and I am wondering why our application for solar power is pending.”

In response the Department of Energy senior officer Frank Rokowaqa informed Mr Bainimarama that the reason for delay was the delay in solar panel equipment delivery.

“As soon as the solar equipment to Labasa arrived we will immediately carry out their project,” Mr Rokowaqa said.

Mr Bainimarama advised Mr Rokowaqa to install solar panels as soon as possible, as the villagers depended on solar for lighting up their homes.

“The villagers have been without electricity throughout their lives and the pending project for many years is not sign of effective service delivery,” Mr Bainimarama said.
