A-G to hold meetings with IMF, other organisations

The Fijian Government explored options for attracting private sector investment at a meeting in Washington DC between Attorney-General and Minister for Finance, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, and representatives from the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency.

The meeting, which included MIGA executive vice president and chief executive officer Keiko Honda, director Muhamet Fall, and the MIGA executive management team, covered MIGA’s product offerings for facilitating private sector investment into small, developing economies.

MIGA is an international financial institution and member of the World Bank Group that specialises in offering risk insurance and credit enhancements on foreign direct investments in developing countries.

MIGA’s insurance products would guarantee protection on investments against perceived risks and help investors access funding sources with improved financial terms and conditions.

“Fiji needs of a new set of tools and insurance products to fund our development across a broad front, particularly in our health, housing and energy sectors. MIGA’s products could offer new opportunities to attract private sector investment into Fiji, bringing more money into the Fijian economy and raising the standard of living for ordinary Fijians,” Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said.

The A-G is in Washington DC to hold a series of meetings with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and other organisations with a particular focus on Fiji’s financial needs in the wake of Tropical Cyclone Winston.
