Ministry of Health and Medical Services has recorded more than 200 dengue fever cases so far in Fiji.

Ministry of Health and Medical Services Permanent Secretary Dr Meciusela Tuicakau said: “These cases are recorded from January 1 to last week.

“The public is urged to ensure their surroundings are clean and free of dengue mosquito breeding places,” he said.

Meanwhile, about 800 dengue fever cases were recorded in Fiji last year.

23 typhoid cases confirmed

The ministry has also recorded 23 confirmed and 58 suspected cases of typhoid in Fiji.

Ministry of Health and Medical Services Permanent Secretary Dr Meciusela Tuicakau said: “These typhoid cases were recorded in Tailevu subdivision.

“Our medical teams are on the ground to control the spread of the disease,” he said.

Dr Tuicakau said the 23 confirmed and 58 suspected cases have been treated.

Cause of typhoid

Typhoid fever is contracted by drinking or eating contaminated food or water. People with acute illness can contaminate the surrounding water supply through stool, which contains a high concentration of the bacteria. Contamination of the water supply can, in turn, taint the food supply. The bacteria can survive for weeks in water or dried sewage.
