The Biosecurity Authority of Fiji has recruited 31 Biosecurity Officers to help enhance the Authority’s services at current locations and in maritime zones.

BAF Executive Chairman Mr Xavier Riyaz Khan said the new Biosecurity Officers will be invaluable in meeting the Authority’s goals and objectives while meeting the government’s visions to improve services at remote locations.

Mr Khan said due to growth in economic activities in the seaports and airports, additional Biosecurity Officers are required as a proactive measure to prevent breaches of biosecurity laws at the border and other illegal activities such as bioterrorism, drug smuggling & money laundering.

“The recruitment of the new Biosecurity Officers has been enabled through the Operational grants received from the Government and is in line with Fijian Government’s commitment to unquestionable quarantine services at all ports of entry and also to remote and outer islands,” Mr Khan said.

For the first time, BAF Human Resources and Executive Management team tailored a week-long Induction Training for the 31 Biosecurity Officers to integrate the trainees with the BAF’s corporate culture and identity and acquaint them with the entire process of BAF.

“The new BSOs are assigned to different BAF Stations where they will be further trained practically in different scopes of BAF by senior officers who will be helping the new Biosecurity Officers to become a productive member of BAF team,” Mr Khan said.

“BAF places a huge emphasis on transparency and accountability and as such we have put in place a very fair and transparent recruitment process to the most qualified and suitable candidates.

“For the first time in 2015, BAF introduced Aptitude test for all applicants which have helped BAF recruit suitably qualified and skilled workers who are ready to broaden their horizons and work for organisation offering huge opportunities,” Mr Khan said.

He said additional personnel on the ground especially around port of entries will help enhance border security for the entire nation.
