The  Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) Labasa mill will open for this year crushing season during the first week of June.

This was confirmed by the FSC Labasa mill general manager Karia Christopher to FijiSun yesterday.

“The mill is ready for crushing season and we expect no major mechanical problem this year,” Mr Christopher said.

“Last year the mill produced more than 60,000 tonnes of sugar and this year we hope to produce more than this amount,” he said.

“In fact our aim in the next three years is to produce one million tonnes of sugar.”

“We can only do this with the help of the farmers.

“Right now we have about 4,000 farmers from ten sectors in Vanua Levu.

“There are many farmers returning to sugar farming and I would like to encourage more farmers to make a comeback.

“The Government has been very supportive and providing grants to farmers and they should be happy and make use of it.

“There is future in the sugar industry and I have witnessed some farmers gaining confidence and investing their time  and energy in sugarcane farm.

“If we all work together hand in hand ,this year will be a successful crushing season.”
