A former Police officer charged with the rape of a 32-year-old woman in Colo-i-Suva in 2008 walked away a free man yesterday.

Log Nandan Goundar was acquitted by High Court judge Justice Vincent Perera.

Goundar had earlier pleaded not guilty to the charge.

While delivering his judgement yesterday Justice Perera said the prosecution failed to prove the charge beyond a shadow of doubt and said there were inconsistencies in the evidence of the complainant.

Two of the three assessors had found Goundar guilty but the third assessor concluded with a not guilty verdict.
