Underdogs Ra High School and Navosa Central College caused major upsets in the Fiji Secondary Schools Rugby League Under-19 quarterfinals at Lawaqa Park, Sigatoka yesterday.

In the first upset Navosa Central edged out favourites Ratu Navula College 12-8 while Ra High beat Ratu Latianara Memorial School 12-4.

Fiji Secondary Schools Rugby League treasurer Laisiasa Corerega said the upsets have blown the competition wide open making teams work extra hard to secure a place in the finals.

“Competition has been really good despite the weather and we thank Vodafone, Fiji National Rugby League and the students for making the tournament an entertaining and exciting one,” Corerega said.

“Judging from the quarterfinal results, there is no certainty in who will win because of the major upsets in the U19 grade. But it has also proven that the competition is getting bigger, better and most of all tougher for every school. It is good to see these underdog schools come up and you can tell that they have been preparing really well and training really hard. The overall quality of the tournament has improved and I think the semifinals will be even more exciting and very competitive also.
