Domestic violence is not a private matter in any household, it is a serious crime, says Rosy Akbar

The Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation made these comments while closing the Violence Against Women and Human Rights workshop at the Fiji Police Headquarters at Vinod Patel Plaza in Suva last Friday.

“We all must have heard the statistics about the rates of violence with 64 per cent of women experiencing physical or sexual violence over their lifetime,” she said.

“We’ve all read about women speaking about their stories of violence that have now driven our country’s leaders to make this a priority.

“We have also received complaints from women saying Police don’t give them a sympathetic ear because of some personal and culturally-based beliefs,” she said.

Ms Akbar said it was just minutes that could mean the difference between life and death of a woman who could be in imminent danger.

“If the cases are not attended to, then you know very well, that it will end up as another crime statistic; another woman being bashed up or murdered or another complaint from a member of our community.

“There is never ever any justification for violence against women and children. And our Police cannot continue to apply their own traditional and outdated mindsets to a present day problem which is preventable,” she said.

Ms Akbar said they needed to be exposed, counselled, and administratively disciplined or cut loose from our new Fiji Police Force and I know your Commissioner of Police supports this accountability approach as well; gentlemen, it is a new day,” she said.
